2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia

Last year at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Alfa Romeo showcased a
high-performance sedan dubbed Quadrifoglio (the top trim model
of its Giulia lineup) which set the auto world abuzz.  The
range-topping Alfa Romeo Giulia was a perfect piece of
excellent Italian craftsmanship.  However, it’s quite
disappointing that Alfa Romeo is yet to release the model.
However, the automaker has confirmed a fall sale date meaning
the wait is almost over. The vehicle was also showcased at the
recent 2016 New York Auto Show.

The Quadrifoglio is the most powerful street-legal car to ever
come from Alfa Romeo’s factory in its 105-years in operation.
The Quadrifoglio is not alone; it comes with two siblings which
slot below it in terms of both power and equipment. They are
the base Giulia and the Giulia Ti. Read along to find out more

2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia Exterior

The 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia is based on the modular platform
dubbed “Giorgio”. This platform offers a lower COG, less weight
and a 50/50 weight distribution. The body is also made from
aluminum and composite materials.

The design is unlike anything we expected from ALFA Romeo. The
automaker has surely caught us by surprise. The model features
Alfa Romeo’s signature trefoil front grille. Flanking the
grille is a pair of sleek halogen headlights that extend
towards the nose. Also featured is a pair of LED DRLs. Below
the grille is a gigantic air intake.  The hood is very
aggressive.

At the back, the design is less drastic but just as aggressive
and sporty as the front. It includes stylish taillights adopted
from the 2006 Alfa 159. You will also find a subtle spoiler on
top of the trunk lid. Its beefy bumper on the other hand
features a massive diffuser which integrates an intimidating
quad-pipe exhaust system. The vehicle also features short
overhangs.

Complementing the aggressive profile are gills placed behind
its front fender, an entrenched character line that runs
towards the rear beefy haunches and creases at the bottom of
its doors. These creases highlight the vehicle’s protruding
side skirts. To cap it all is a set of 17-18- or 19-inch
specially designed wheels aimed at warning rivals that it means
business. Behind the rims are huge brake calipers and discs
which indicate what lies underneath its hood.

2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia Interior

Alfa Romeo chose a simple but sporty design for the cabin. As
such, the cabin is oriented towards the driver just like a
fully-fledged sports car. Buyers will have an option between
wood, carbon-fiber and aluminum interior trim.

A large instruments cluster is mounted on the dashboard while
an infotainment screen is fixed above the center stack. The
vehicle comes with the Connect 3D Nav infotainment system which
offers excellent satellite navigation. Bluetooth connectivity,
Smartphone integration and a Wi-fi hotspot will also be
available.

You will only find a couple of buttons and knobs as the design
is very clean and uncluttered. Its flat-bottomed steering wheel
is wrapped in leather and Alcantara. A start/stop button is
also integrated to the steering wheel. The cabin accommodates
five passengers o its leather and Alcantara-wrapped seats. The
center console, on the other hand, features a carbon-fiber
case.

Engine Specs and Performace

In the states, Alfa Romeo will only offer the Giulia with two
engine choices.  The standard Giulia and the more equipped
Giulia Ti (Turismo Internazionale) will be powered by the same
drive-train.

It is a new turbocharged 2.0 L 4-cylinder engine with direct
fuel injection. The engine is good for 276 horses and 295 lb-ft
of torque. It is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission
system with paddle shifters. The transmission system is jointly
developed with ZF. The two models will be offered in both RWD
and AWD.

The engine powers the Giulia to hit 60 mph in 5.5 seconds from
standstill towards a top speed of 149 mph.

If you want more thrills in your daily driving routine, opt for
the Quadrifoglio.  The Quadrifoglio packs a
twin-turbocharged 2.9 L V-6 engine under its hood. The engine
is capable of producing 505 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. The
engine is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard. The
Quadrifoglio bolts from 0-60 mph in only 3.8 seconds and has a
top speed of 191 mph.

EPA ratings are not yet out. Check back later for more details.
We also understand that other markets will get an additional
2.0 L diesel engine tuned to produce either 150 hp or 180 hp.

Price and release date

Alfa Romeo is yet to announce pricing details or the release
date of the standard Giulia models. However, the automaker has
announced that the “top dog” Quadrifoglio will hit the market
this fall and has an MSRP of $ 70,000. According to rumors, the
standard Giulia and Giulia Ti will have a starting price
ranging from $ 35,000 to $ 40,000.

Competition

The standard 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia and Giulia Ti will be well
equipped to compete with the likes of BMW 3
Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class. However, the Quadrifoglio
targets a different bunch of the German luxury sedans. It will
compete with the Audi RS, Mercedes-Benz-AMG C63 and BMW M3. The
automaker aims to launch a multi-layered assault on the premium
sedan segment with the Giulia lineup.
