2017 Nissan Micra

Recently at the Paris Auto Show, Nissan unveiled the new
generation of the Micra, which was quite a shocker to the
automotive world. Except for the name, the new 2017 Nissan
Micra shares absolutely nothing with its predecessor. As you
might recall, the predecessor model was under-engineered, had
low-quality technologies and a host of plastic surfaces. The
model was targeted to those buyers looking for the cheapest car
in the market. The model was sold to developing economies and
as such was not a delight to anyone.

Well, you can imagine the shock when Nissan unveiled quite an
attractive hatch with the European buyers in mind. The new
model has a stylish exterior and features an array of
technologies that no one would expect to find in a vehicle of
its size and stature. The last version of the Micra was
released 6 years ago. In fact, the Nissan Micra features
technologies no one would have dreamed about back then.

Gone are the days of lackluster design; now the new model will
be able to compete with the likes of Honda Jazz and Ford Fiesta
without looking out of place. It is unfortunate though that the
model won’t be offered in the US.  Read along to find out
what Nissan has packed in the new Micra, a car that threatens
to unsettle the super-mini segment.

2017 Nissan Micra Exterior

We always knew Nissan was doing something special with the
Micra ever since we captured spy shots of the model under heavy
camouflage. Wherever you look, there is something new or
upgraded. To start with, at the front, Nissan has enlarged the
V-motion grille. It features a wider and larger chrome V. In
addition, its plastic louvers on the upper side of the grille
also feature a flattened V shape. The hood is more aggressive
and still carries muscular bodylines that run into the fenders
and onto the side profile. The headlights are also new and are
integrated with running lights on their inner edges. The fascia
also features rectangular-shaped fog lights.

On the sides, the Micra features new side mirrors, which are
mounted farther down on its front doors.  The rear doors
don’t have a weird curvature as the automaker has opted for a
more straight design.  The area below the bodyline but
above the side skirts has a 3D effect that adds to the stylish
design of the side profile.  The aggressive lines on the
hood curve into the fenders and the doors to finish off the
excellent side profile of the Micra.

At the rear, the 2017 Nissan Micra features a bold overhang
while the lower part of the hatch features prominent bodylines.
The new taillights rise from the body to create a 3D effect.
Reverse lights have been integrated into the center of the
taillights. The model also features a wider black insert as
well as a horizontal air vent just below the insert.

In general, Nissan’s design team went into overdrive to make
the 2017 Nissan Micra one of the models to watch in this
segment. It is just unfortunate that the model won’t be offered
in the States. Once more, the American market misses on an
affordable hot hatch.

2017 Nissan Micra Interior

Just like the exterior, the interior has been completely
overhauled. The model comes with a smaller and
rectangular-shaped HVAC mounted above the center stack.  A
7-inch display is mounted at the center of the dash. At each
end of the dash is a circular vent, one of the only features
carried over from the outgoing Micra. The vents are however
more pronounced and feature a bright chrome surround. The
display is used to control the vehicle’s navigation system,
audio system as well as manage the Siri voice control via Apple
CarPlay. The model comes with a 6-speaker Bose audio system,
which is customized for this model.

Further, the new Nissan Micra features a flat-bottomed steering
wheel. The model also comes with anew instrument cluster. The
instrument cluster has a refined look, which features a small
TFT display at the center flanked by a tachometer on the left
and a speedometer on the right. The lighting of the instrument
cluster adds to the Micra’s modern interior look.

The model comes with sporty front seats that are upholstered in
a quality fabric.  The seats are bolstered with a
perforated gray material and feature enhanced backrests that
offer improved support. The rear seats fold down to increase
the hatch’s cargo space. Although official information is not
out, Nissan claims the model will offer cargo room that will be
among the best in the segment.

Tech-wise, the new Nissan Micra is well equipped for a model in
this segment. It features emergency braking, pedestrian
recognition, an intelligent round view camera, high beam
assist, traffic sign recognition as well as blind spot
monitoring.

Engine specs and performance

The new Micra will be powered by three drive-trains. The base
engine is a 1.0 L, naturally-aspirated 3-cylinder mill good for
75 hp. For more power, Nissan offers a 0.9 L, turbocharged
3-cyliner powerplant that produces 90 hp.

There will also be a turbo-diesel engine with a displacement of
1.5 liters.  This engine produces 90 horses just like the
0.9 L, petrol mill. The three engines are mated to a 5-speed
manual gearbox.
