Don’t be fooled by its bare top which illustrates VW’S idea of
a convertible subcompact crossover SUV. The T-Cross Breeze
concept previews an upcoming CUV set to slot below the VW
Tiguan CUV. Volkswagen says that they the T-Cross Breeze
previews the first of three planned SUVs that will join the
current Touareg and Tiguan models.
Further, Klaus Bischoff, VW’s head of design further intimated
that the concept previews a very compact SUV that they plan to
take into production. The T-Cross is even smaller than the
T-Roc concept which we saw at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show.
The T-Roc previews a crossover that is almost the size of the
VW Golf. The two-door convertible resembles the Range Rover
Evoque Convertible which was recently introduced.
During its Debut at this year’s Geneva Auto Show, Herbet Diess,
VW’S chairman of Board of Management quipped that the model is
the first open-top SUV in its class. He went on to claim that
it will be an affordable and cheeky cabriolet that offers a
raised position for a perfect view. Whether VW will include a
cabriolet variant of the model when it goes to production
remains to be seen. A conventional 5-door SUV is most likely.
Volkswagen T-Cross Breeze Exterior
The T-Cross Breeze offers a preview of how the VW small
crossovers will look like. The automaker has added some unique
styling cues that will help tell them apart from their larger
The T-Cross Breeze stands at 162.7 inches long and has a width
of 70.8 inches while its wheelbase stretches 101 inches. The
convertible CUV features a wide radiator grille flanked by
narrow LED headlights and LED DRLs. The fog lights are also
surrounded by LED rings and are mounted on the lower corners of
the front bumper.
On the sides, the vehicle features a double character line
which rises over the rear wheel arch. The sides also feature
stylish 19-inch wheels. The rear features a trunk-lid which is
flanked by two round-shaped red reflectors and LED taillights.
We anticipate a production model with a fifth door at the rear
though. The convertible CUV also comes with a wide skid plate
to help when driving in off-road terrains. The exterior is
finished in Summer Green Metallic paint job.
Volkswagen T-Cross Breeze Interior
The CUV interior continues the Summer Green Metallic exterior
color trim. Its interior designers have hooked up its
panels with a tri-tone theme which includes white, black and
the summer green. The seats on the other hand feature black and
white as the main colors and summer green as a contrating
strips. It will accommodate four passengers but we expect a
production model without a soft top to haulup to five
One thing that stands out on the cabin is the infotainment
system which is an upgraded version of the one we saw on the
BUDD-E concept which was showcased at CES in January. Controls
on the centerstack are all touch-sensitive except window
switche and the button that operates the vehicle’s soft top.
Its new human-machine interface which is detached from the dash
just like wih the BUDD-e can be controlled via gestures. It
also features a steering wheel and 3 glass scroll wheels which
replace the conventional gear shift.
Other interior features include an Active Info Display placed
in front of the driver. The display is customizable and
displays navigation information, maps and other important
The main unit of the infotainment system is mounted at the
center of the dash and the driver can customize it depending on
the information he wants to see. The system integrates Android
Auto, Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink as standard. For the
audiophiles, there is an 8-speaker 300-watts BeatsAudio premium
Expect a more conventional interior when the production model
arrives probably in 2018 or ’19.
Engine Specs and Performance
Under the hood, the disguised CUV concept features a
turbocharged 1.0 L 3-cylinder gasoline engine. The engine
is capable of producing 110 hp and 129 lb-ft of torque at 1,500
rpm. The engine which uses direct injection is mated to a
7-speed dual shift double clutch transmission system that
channels power to the front wheels.
Volkswagen says the engine can power the T-Cross Breeze concept
to hit 60 mph from standstill in 10.3 seconds and attain a top
speed of 117 mph. In terms of fuel economy, the CUV is pretty
frugal and is rated at 56.5 mpg on combined drives and has a
115g/km CO2 emission rating.
According to VW, this engine will be joined by 2 more
three-cylinder units and a 4-cylinder mill for the production
model. Specs on the other engines will be availed later.

When the production model comes out, it will cost less than the
